Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that prepares the faithful for Easter. During this time, Christians are called to seek the Lord in prayer, serve by giving alms, and practice self-control through fasting. The season also includes the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays, although other forms of fasting and almsgiving are encouraged throughout the season. The ashes used on Ash Wednesday symbolize the dust from which God made us and serve as a reminder of our mortality and the need for God's mercy. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches taken from the previous year's Palm Sunday Mass.
